I've read up on them and I remember reading about how if you see a person standing in a photo, look behind them and see if you can see the legs of a stand. These stands were like doll stands for porcelain dolls that clamp to the back and have wires run through the sleeves.
If you look behind the little girl's feet you'll see legs to what I believe is one of those life size doll stands.
